Kamalani groundbreaking led by Kaponoʻai Molitau on Jan. 14, 2016.
High-speed internet, gas energy and private yards are all value-added features of a new affordable housing project planned for North Kīhei on Maui.
Site work for the Kamalani project began in March, with construction planned for this fall.
Project representatives say the project includes: a high-speed fiber optic broadband network; gas ranges and dryers and a tankless water heater that allow for more efficiency and precision control; and private yards, including flats located on the second floor.

The project’s first increment include s170 affordable condominium townhomes and flats being sold under the county’s residential workforce housing program. The first homes are scheduled for completion in Spring of 2017.
“One of the nice things about developing a brand-new community is the opportunity to look at the latest advances in building and design and see what we can incorporate into the project,” said Grant Chun, vice president of A&B Properties, an affiliate of Kamalani. “We’re especially excited about including some great enhancements like high-speed internet and private yards for every condominium unit in a community designed for the affordable residential market.”
Some of Kamalani’s uncommon features will include:
· High-speed, broadband internet access via a built-in fiber optic system, allowing for internet speeds up to 1 gig, included throughout the Kamalani community. Unlike a traditional copper and coaxial system that depends on electricity, a fiber optic system transmits signals by light; is less susceptible to corrosion, radio noise and nearby electrical cabling; and has a significantly longer lifespan.
· Gas energy in every home, offering reliable, efficient and earth-friendly benefits. Each condominium home will have a gas range for precision control and instant on and off; a gas dryer for drying clothes faster; and a tankless gas water heater that uses less space and heats up water faster and more efficiently than a traditional water heater.
· A full complement of major appliances will be installed in and included with every home, including a refrigerator, dishwasher, range with self-cleaning oven, recirculating range hood, full size stacked washer and dryer, and water heater.
· Each condominium home – including flats located on the second floor – will have its own private yard, a design feature particularly appealing to pet owners.
Located in north Kihei, the fee simple condominium homes in Kamalani’s first increment include either two or three bedrooms and 1.5 or 2 baths, with prices beginning in the high $200,000s for a two-bedroom, and in the mid-$300,000s for a three-bedroom. \
To date, more than 250 sales applications have been distributed and approximately 400 residents have completed a required homebuyer education course.
Applications must be submitted by June 30 for an opportunity to participate in the project’s sales lottery.
