Now OPEN: Landslide Forces Closure of Hāna Highway in Kailua
Update: 2:20 p.m. 7/21/16
The Hāna Highway is now OPEN in both directions following the completion of debris removal from a landslide reported earlier this morning in Kailua between Mile 6 and 7. The highway was closed for 7.5 hours while state crews worked to clear mud, trees and debris from the road. This was the second extended closure of the Hāna Highway this week. On Sunday, the road was closed for 12 hours because of a landslide at Wailua between Mile 19 and 20.
Update: 9:50 a.m., 6:30 a.m. 7/21/16
The Hāna Highway at Mile 6-7 in Kailua is CLOSED in both directions due to a landslide.
The closure is in effect until further notice.
Police closed the road at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2016.
Motorists tell us that at 7:30 a.m., police on scene had advised that the closure could last from 4 to 5 hours; however, we have no official word from authorities on how long the cleanup will take.
Incident Comes 4 Days After Wailua Landslide
The landslide comes following a separate landslide on the Hāna Highway reported on Sunday, July 17, at Mile 19.7 near the Waikani Bridge in Wailua.
Sources tell us Sunday’s landslide stretched 70-feet and spanned the width of the Hāna Highway. Maui police said the landslide resulted in a 20-foot pile up of debris.
That incident forced the closure of the highway for 12 hours as state crews worked to clean the road of debris, mud and trees.
