Maui Crime, Aug. 28–Sept. 3: Burglaries, Break-Ins, Thefts

Maui police responded to 9 burglaries, 20 vehicle thefts, and 40 vehicle break-ins in Maui County over a seven day period, between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3, 2016.

At around 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, a Maui man was riding his dirt bike (License 513MVS) in the dirt field area behind the Valley Isle Memorial Park in Haʻikū.

While riding his dirt bike, the victim came across a group of unknown males who were trying to tow a silver Mazda, according to police reports.  One of the males from the group then approached the victim and asked if he could ride his dirt bike.  The victim told police he allowed the male to ride the bike because he was afraid to say no.

While the suspect was operating the dirt bike, the victim went to check on a friend who was stuck in a gulch nearby.  When he returned, police reports say the individual who was riding the man’s dirt bike was gone, along with the dirt bike, leaving in an unknown direction.

The number of vehicle thefts was up with 20 incidents reported compared to the 19 incident reports a week earlier. The incidents were reported in Kahului, Waiehu, Makawao, Lānaʻi, Wailuku, Haʻikū, Kīhei and Hāliʻimaile.  Eleven of the vehicles were recovered.

Burglary incidents were down to 9 from the 15 incidents reported the week before.

Vehicle break-ins more than tripled to 40 from 15 incidents reported the week before.
