Maui Health System Names New CEO & Hospital Administrator

The Maui Health System today announced that Michael Rembis, FACHE (Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives), has been named CEO and Hospital Administrator. Michael brings more than 35 years of community hospital leadership and hospital operations experience to Maui. He will assume his duties at Maui Health System on Aug. 21, 2017.

Rembis replaces Ray Hahn, who will leave Maui Health System next month to serve as senior vice president and COO for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals in Hawaiʻi. Ray recently led the transfer of Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lānaʻi Community Hospital to Maui Health System.

Rembis comes to Maui Health System from Paladin Healthcare Management, where he served as CEO, and Avanti Hospitals where he served as c CEO. As CEO of Paladin Healthcare he provided hospital leadership and management and as CEO for Avanti Hospitals he provided leadership for Memorial Hospital of Gardena, Community Hospital of Huntington Park, Coast Plaza Hospital, and East Los Angeles Doctors Hospital.

Rembis’ hospital leadership experience also includes holding top positions at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, Riverside Community Hospital, Centinela Freeman Health System, and JFK Medical Center.

Rembis earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and holds a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Southern California.

Hahn has been promoted to senior vice president and chief operating officer for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaiʻi Region. Hahn has been with Kaiser Permanente since 2005, most recently as CEO and hospital administrator for Maui Health System.

The leadership change is one of handful announced by Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi today.

Mary Ann Barnes, RN, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaii Region, will be retiring on Sept. 8, 2017. Bill Caswell, senior vice president and chief operating officer for Kaiser Permanente Southern California, will serve as Hawaiʻi’s interim regional president while an executive search is conducted.

Barnes has been with Kaiser Permanente for more than 43 years, starting her career as an ICU nurse. She joined Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi in 2014.

Under her leadership the state’s largest integrated care organization opened a new clinic on Kauaʻi, grew membership to more than 250,000 members, and launched the historic venture of Maui Health System, a community hospital system affiliated with Kaiser Permanente, operating three hospitals on Maui and Lānaʻi.
