Looking Ahead
Breezy trade winds will be strongest along and behind a weakening front that is forecast to move down the island chain from Kauai to Maui County today. Showers will be focused along windward slopes as the feature moves through, though scattered showers will be blown across to leeward areas on the gusty trades. The remnants of the dissipated front will stall near Maui and the Big Island tonight before falling apart on Saturday. A surface low far northeast of the islands will cut off the trades this weekend, leading to a prevailing land and sea breeze pattern. Weak trade winds will likely return next week, though a low level trough may linger over the islands.
Today
We expect east winds from 15 to 25 mph today. Partly sunny skies are forecast with scattered showers for windward and mauka spots in the morning. By the afternoon increased cloud cover and shower coverage are expected as a front moves down the island chain. Lots of leeward sunshine with the possibility of scattered afternoon showers. Temperatures up to 83° to 88°.
UV index at 10 (“very high” exposure level)
Tonight
Mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers. Low temperatures from 71° to 76°. Winds are expected to be out of the east from 10 to 20 mph and transitioning to light and variable.
