Ask the Mayor: What’s Being Done About Drugs and Homeless on Front Street?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his staff.
Dear Mayor Alan Arakawa,
Q: Why is nothing being done about homeless and drug deals right on Front Street across from the old Hard Rock? The number of loiterers keeps growing and police do nothing to get them to move out. People are starting to shy away from the area especially in [the] evening. It’s a growing problem that needs to be corrected.
A: The Maui Police Department is aware of your complaint and are working with the Homeless Division within our Department of Housing and Human Concerns. Division staff will make contact with this group and if any of them need or want housing assistance, then those services will be made available to them. By the same token, if any of them are becoming a public nuisance or breaking the law then law enforcement will intercede. Mahalo.
