The County of Maui Department of Planning is inviting the public to participate in their We Are West Maui photo contest on Facebook and Instagram. The department said they hope the contest will be a fun way to get people involved in updating the community plan.

The department is looking for photos that capture the people and lifestyle of West Maui, popular places, and the issues affecting the community.

Below is a list of the photo contest categories:

  • People and Lifestyle:  Photos of individuals or groups of people as they live, work, and play in West Maui.
  • Places:  Popular sites in West Maui.
  • Issues and Concerns: Photos that show an issue the community is concerned with and wants addressed.

The contest is open to anyone who lives, works, or plays in West Maui. Submissions can be made through Facebook, Instagram, or by email at wearewestmaui@mauicounty.gov.  The contest ends at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018.  More information about the contest rules and the West Maui Community Plan update can be found online or on Facebook and Instagram @wearemaui. The winning photos will be featured in the community plan and on the County’s website and social media pages.

The West Maui Community Plan is the first of Maui Island’s six regional community plans that will be updated since the Maui Island Plan was adopted in 2012. The existing West Maui Community Plan was adopted in 1996. The update process involves numerous community meetings and workshops. The Community Plan Advisory Committee will review a draft of the updated plan and provide recommendations. The Maui Planning Commission will then review that draft and send it to the Maui County Council, which will review and adopt the updated plan.
