Visitors to the island of Maui spent a total of $364.6 million in November, according to preliminary statistics from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority. While the amount of days visitors spent on Maui increased in November 2018 compared to the previous year, visitorsʻ daily spending decreased.
Visitor arrivals increased by 4 percent, with rises in arrivals from US West and US East that offset declines in arrivals from Japan and Canada. The average daily census increased by 5 percent to 61,378 visitors in November. Through the first 11 months of 2018, visitor spending increased 10 percent and nearly 7 percent from the previous year.
Visitors throughout all of the Hawaiian Islands spent a total of $1.29 billion in November 2018, which was nearly flat compared to November 2017, according to the HTA.
On a statewide level, average daily visitor spending was down 3 percent in November year-over-year. Visitors from US East and Canada spent more per day, while visitors from Japan and All Other International Markets spent less.
Total visitor arrivals rose 4 percent in November 2018 compared to the previous year, with growth realized in arrivals from both air service and cruise ships. Both total visitor days and the number of visitors on any given day in November increased 3 percent from the previous year.
Oʻahu, Maui, and Kauaʻi all recorded increases in both visitor spending and visitor arrivals in November year-over-year. Over 1 million trans-Pacific air seats served the Hawaiian Islands in November, up 7 percent year-over-year. Growth in scheduled air seats from Canada, US West, Japan, Oceania, and US East offset fewer air seats from Other Asia markets.
Year-to-date through the first 11 months of 2018, visitors to the Hawaiian Islands spent a total of $16.22 billion, an 8 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Hawaiʻi’s four largest visitor markets, US West, US East, Japan, and Canada, all reported growth in visitor spending compared to the same period last year. Combined visitor spending from All Other International Markets also increased.
Year-to-date through November, total visitor arrivals increased 6 percent compared to last year, with growth from US West, US East, Canada, and All Other International Markets, offsetting fewer visitors from Japan. All four larger Hawaiian Islands saw growth in visitor spending over the first 11 months of 2018. Visitor arrivals increased on Oʻahu, Maui, and Kauaʻi but declined slightly on the island of Hawaiʻi.
A total of 12,066,873 trans-Pacific air seats served the Hawaiian Islands year-to-date through November, up 8.8 percent from the same period last year.
