Paper Garden Opens New Wailea Store
By Wendy Osher
Fans of the Paper Garden specialty card shop and stationery gift store can find the retailer on Maui again after a year-long hiatus and move to the south side.
The card boutique closed it’s long-time location at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Kahului in April of 2018 after more than two decades at the Central Maui site.
Now, after a 14 month break, owner Pam Zemrus, is excited to announce the opening of her “happy” inspired new locale at the Wailea Village Center at 100 Wailea Ike Drive.
The store officially opens on Monday, June 10, 2019, with a grand opening event planned at a later date.
The store, which features “lovingly curated collection of greeting cards, stationery gifts, wrapping paper, ribbon, party goods, balloons and more,” will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., including weekends.
“It was time for a change for me–kind of a new chapter… I wanted to bring a card shop like this to the south side for a long time and just never had the opportunity until now,” said Zemrus. “I love the mall, but after 21 years doing anything, you’re ready for a change,” she said.
“I was at Kaʻahumanu for a really long time, and more and more big box stores were coming in that carried cards and notes,” said Zemrus. The QKC site was also just two doors down from the Hallmark store, but Zemrus said it did not deter a loyal customer base that frequented the location to find a unique selection of gifts, specialty items and cards offered no where else on island.
Like the old site, the new Paper Garden will offer custom printing and gift wrapping service as well.
“Having a new center like this is so inspiring because it’s brand new, it’s beautiful, we have a view and it’s bright,” said Zemrus.
Paper Garden is the first of a growing list of locally based retailers that will be moving in to the Wailea Village Center. The list local retailers will also include an art gallery, an artist-in-residence and a coffee shop, next door to Paper Garden.
Another new tenant is Hue Interior Design, which is building a satellite store in a stand-alone building at the Wailea property.
Owner and Interior Designer, Jessica McLellan, ADID said the 2,000-square-foot store will be a second location for Hue, and will serve as a feeder store for the main Kahului showroom located at 210 Alamaha Street.
The Wailea site will offer home goods and accessories with a focus on lifestyle items, but will also have an interior designer on staff to assist with customer needs. The Hue Interior Design Wailea location is hoping to open in the beginning of July.
According to the Wailea Village website, the center will offer a new design and expanded offerings starting this year.
