Maui-based and locally-owned Koholā Gallery opened this week at the new Wailea Village center.  Starting today, Aug. 7, the gallery will begin featuring a painter or photographer on location every Wednesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. allowing residents and visitors to meet artists, ask questions and talk story.

Rooted in its namesake in the Hawaiian language, Koholā (meaning “whale”), the new Gallery pays homage to the Humpback whales that come to Hawaiʻi each winter. Koholā Gallery features photographic portraits of whales, turtles, coral reefs, Maui’s famous shipwreck, surreal sunsets, pastel sunrises, stunning landscapes created along the road to Hāna, and beautiful beaches for residents and visitors to discover, appreciate and collect.

Koholā Gallery offers both limited and open edition portraits. The limited-edition collection is featured on premium face-mounted acrylic medium, allowing light to refract evenly for greater visual detail and presentation of the images. Open edition artwork is produced on aluminum, canvas, and fine-art paper. In addition to photography, Koholā Gallery also offers paintings, glass, and sculptures by well-known local artists Mark MacKay, Earl Thompson and Dale Zarella.

Koholā Gallery is committed to marine education and conservation and will host fundraising events for worthy non-profit organizations that protect our oceans and promote conservation at least twice a year. The new gallery is owned by Christopher Alliston, Bryan Blauvelt and Douglas Hoffman. Each of the three partners is a scuba instructor, and their mutual love for the ocean, whales and photography has brought them together in this new venture.
