Maui Hālau Celebrates 15 Years of Hula

In November of 2004, 75 hopeful hula dancers gave Kumu ʻIliahi and Haunani Paredes a chance when they started Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi.

Now, 15 years and countless awards later, the hālau stands at 300 haumāna (students) strong.

The husband-wife hula duo says the hālau has brought them “many blessings.”

“Lives have been interwoven and hearts touched; an ‘ohana flourishes,” a press release read.

To celebrate the milestone, the hālau will be hosting a special concert of hula and mele (song) at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Jan. 12.
