35-Foot Surf Forecast for North Shores of Maui, Moloka‘i

Surf of up to 40 feet is forecast for the north and west facing shores of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi today, as the National Weather Service continues a high surf warning for most islands through 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Surf of 25 to 35 feet is forecast along north facing shores of Oʻahu, Molokaʻi and Maui today, lowering to 20 to 28 feet tonight.

For west shores of Oʻahu and Molokaʻi, surf will be in the 18 to 26 foot range today, lowering to 14 to 20 feet tonight. Surf of 10 to 16 feet is forecast along west facing shores of Hawaiʻi Island through tonight.

The NWS says the very large swell will produce hazardous surf along exposed north and west facing shores through tonight.

The public can expect ocean water surging over the coastline, creating the potential for damage to coastal properties and infrastructure. Powerful currents will be present at most beaches. Large breaking waves and strong currents may also impact harbor entrances causing challenging boat handling.

The public is advised to stay well away from the water’s edge along the affected shorelines and use extreme caution when launching or landing boats along the affected coasts.
