Man Critically Injured On Maui When Firework Explodes in Face

In a 12 hour period beginning on Dec. 31, 2019 (6 p.m.) and ending Jan. 1, 2020 (6 a.m.), the Maui Fire Department responded to several incidents believed to be fireworks related.

There were a total of seven trash bin fires with two of them confirmed to have firework remnants within.

At a residence on Molokai, a receptacle with firework waste had caught fire and nearly burned a garage area. The fire was brought under control by residents prior to the arrival of fire personnel.

At 11:29 p.m. last night, a Toyota Landcruiser sustained fire damage from suspected arson. Fire crews arrived at a residence on South Alaniu Place in Kihei and found a homeowner applying water to the smoldering vehicle. Upon initial investigation, spent fireworks were found inside the vehicle.

At 12:06 a.m., a 30-year-old man was severely injured when an unknown type of firework reportedly exploded in his face and knocked him unconscious. The incident occurred fronting a residence on Niheu Street in Lahaina. Fire personnel assisted Medics in treating the victim who suffered severe trauma to the left side of his face, as well as severe burns to his head, neck, and chest. He was transported by Medics to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
