Flood Advisory for Maui Island Until 2:45 p.m.

Update:

The National Weather Service has EXTENDED the FLOOD ADVISORY for MAUI, in effect until 2:45 p.m.

A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent.  A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property.

This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

At 11:30 a.m. HST, radar indicated bands of heavy rain continuing to move over the windward slopes of Haleakalā from the east. The highest rain rates were 1 to 2 inches per hour from Kīpahulu to Keʻanae. Stream levels in the area continue to run above normal. Additional rain bands are expected to move over windward Haleakalā through today.

A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent. A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property.

This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

At 8:44 a.m., radar indicated bands of heavy rain moving over the windward slopes of Haleakalā from Kīpahulu to Haʻikū. These bands have been most intense between Hāna and Keʻanae with rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Stream levels in the area are running higher than normal. Additional rain bands are expected to move over windward Haleakalā through today.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Huelo, Paʻuwela, Kīpahulu, Makawao, Nāhiku, Hāna, Kailua and Haleakalv National Park.

The public is reminded to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

There is also a flood watch in effect for Maui and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, in effect until Saturday afternoon.
