Flash Flood Watch Extended for Maui County

A flash flood watch for Maui County has been extended until Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service announced today.

An upper-level low to the west of the Islands will combine with strong trade winds to bring the potential for excessive rainfall, mainly to windward areas.

Although streams and rivers statewide will have elevated water levels, windward areas will be especially susceptible to flash flooding, as the ground is saturated from recent incessant rainfall.

The extended period of rain could cause flooding in low spots which could make some roadways impassable. Debris in streams and gulches may clog bridges and culverts.

“Flash flooding is a dangerous situation. Do not cross fast flowing water in your vehicle or on foot.  Please continue to monitor the weather forecast and be prepared to take immediate action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued,” The NWS wrote in an announcement.

Campers and hikers are being urged to reschedule their outing to a time when weather is expected to be more favorable.
