Ask the Mayor: Maui Bus Kīhei Route
Mayor Michael Victorino answers some of the most-asked questions.
Q: Is it possible to have the Kihei Islander route stop near Walmart before going to the main bus hub in Kahului? It would be nice for Kihei folks trying to do their shopping rather than transferring onto the Kahului Loop route.
A: Mahalo for your question and thank you for riding the Maui Bus. We have a strong team at
our County Department of Transportation that are always looking for ways to improve our
transit services.
Unfortunately for this particular request, we are unable to service the Walmart area through
the Kihei Islander route. The Department has been looking into providing this stop, but due to
the tight timing schedule for our buses to get to Queen Ka`ahumanu Shopping Center and vice
versa to Wailea, it is currently not provided.
However, we are hoping to add bus routes and increase frequency with financial assistance
from the State. We also are looking forward to our new Kahului Transit Hub that is scheduled
for construction on Vevau Street later this year.
