Maui Police Chief Issues Crisis Support Video Message
Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu released a video message about crisis support in the day following the death of a Maui Police Officer. Preliminary reports indicate the 44-year-old off-duty male officer died after sustaining what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In addition to the video message, the Maui Police Department also provided the following information on crisis services:
“If you or someone you love are experiencing a crisis, please reach out for assistance. There are many confidential services that can help. We can all help to try prevent suicide,” Chief Faaumu said.
The department compiled the following warning signs to look for:
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
- Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Withdrawing or isolating themselves
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Extreme mood swings
