Maui Woman Arrested for Alleged Violation of Mask Mandate
Maui police arrested a Maui woman over the weekend for alleged violation of rules and orders relating to mask use.
Maria Maither, 56, of Nāpili was arrested at around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020.
Police say they received numerous complaints between Sunday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, via the mpdquarantine@mpd.net portal.
Complaints relayed that Maither and other employees at a business, located at 5095 Nāpilihau Street were not complying with Hawaiʻi’s statewide mask mandate.
Police say investigators contacted Maither on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at the business, where investigators observed her not wearing a mask while interacting with customers.
Maither was then issued a penal citation for Violation of the Rules and Orders. Maither was also warned that she would be subject to arrest should any further complaints of non-compliance with the mask mandate be received by investigators.
On Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, an additional complaint was received via the mpdquarantine@mpd.net portal with a picture depicting Maither without a mask on while interacting with customers.
Maither was located at the business, where she was arrested and transported to the Lahaina Police Station for processing without incident. Police say the woman posted bail which was set at $2,000.
