Surfer pulled unresponsive from waters at Kanahā, Maui

A male surfer was pulled unresponsive from waters about a half mile off of Kanahā Beach Park Friday morning, Maui fire officials said.

Ocean Safety personnel aboard Jet Ski 10 located the victim and brought him to shore where resuscitation efforts began.

“Unfortunately these efforts were unsuccessful and the individual was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Service personnel,” said Chris Stankis, Acting Information Officer with the Maui Fire Department.

The incident was reported at around 10:18 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022.

Responding units included Engine 1, Rescue 10, Ocean Safety 10 and Jet Ski 10.

Emergency responders say conditions on scene included 8- to 10-foot surf.

The victim’s identity, including age and place of residence were not immediately known.
