A portion of South Kīhei Road, Baldwin Beach Park in Pāʻia and the Central Maui Landfill will remain closed overnight, while officials assess damages from flooding caused by heavy rains that occurred Friday, Jan. 27.

• South Kīhei Road will remain closed from North Kīhei Road to Waipuilani Road, with no immediate estimated time for reopening on Saturday, county officials said.
• Piʻilani Highway remains closed overnight between Mileposts 30 and 32 in the Nuʻu area until work crews can assess the area Saturday morning.
• Baldwin Beach Park and sports fields at County of Maui facilities will remain closed Saturday. The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation will monitor conditions and reassess the parks before reopening them when conditions are safe.
• The Central Maui Landfill will remain closed until further notice. It was closed Friday, with barriers set up on Pūlehu Road above the landfill, when heavy rains caused flooding and left debris on access roads, making them impassable.

The National Weather Service continued a Flash Flood Warning for Maui through Friday evening. A flash flood watch for Maui County remains in effect through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Baldwin Beach Park, Central Maui Landfill closed due to flooding

Baldwin Beach Park in Pāʻia and the Central Maui Lanfill were closed due to flooding Friday afternoon, as the National Weather Service extended a Flash Flood Warning until 7 p.m. Friday.

South Kīhei Road was closed from North Kīhei Road to Waipuilani Road on Friday afternoon, as the National Weather Service reported heavy rainfall moving over the slopes of Haleakalā from the east.

On the back side of Kaupo, Pi’ilani Highway was closed between Mileposts 30 and 32. Barriers were put up on Pūlehu Road above the Central Maui Landfill.

All sports fields at County of Maui parks facilities were closed.

A National Weather Service flash flood warning for Maui remains in effect until 4 p.m. Friday. Heavy rainfall was forecast to continue into the evening.

A flash flood watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Maui, Moloka’i, Lānaʻi and Kaho’olawe.

Maui Emergency Management reports that as of 2:09 p.m., that South Kīhei Road is closed at Kūlanihākoʻi Gulch, and Piʻilani Highway is closed near Nuʻu in East Maui.

MEMA reports that several stream gages along the windward side of Haleakalā indicated rapid rises in water levels.

“Radar showed rainfall continuing to move over the slopes of Haleakalā from the east, with peak rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. This heavy rainfall activity should continue into the evening hours,” according to a MEMA update.
