Maui Native Tommy Musto signs Major League Soccer contract with LAFC
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) on Wednesday announced the signing of Maui native Tommy Musto to a Major League Soccer contract. With the signing, Tommy becomes the first-ever Hawaiʻi-born player to sign with LAFC, and the 13th in league history.
Tommy, 20, grew up with his family in Upcountry Maui (Makawao), and was introduced to soccer by his father who trained Tommy and his siblings at home. The at-home training program, plus numerous sacrifices and lots of miles traveled, has produced three top-flight players. Tommy’s older brother Joey is a senior on the Hawaiʻi Pacific University team, and his sister Nikolina plays professionally in Australia for Heidelberg United FC.
Tommy attended Hawai’i Technology Academy on Maui and played with the Rush Hawaiʻi Soccer Club before committing to the University of Portland in 2022. He signed his first pro contract in 2023 with LAFC2, the club’s second-division team.
Musto now trains daily in Los Angeles alongside some of the world’s best players, including MLS Cup Champion and LAFC captain Ilie Sanchez and World Cup Champion Hugo Lloris. Musto is coached in L.A. by US Soccer Hall of Famer and former US National Team defender Steve Cherundolo.
Tommy was rostered for last night’s home match at BMO Stadium against Minnesota United.
