Four people transported to hospital following head-on collision on Hāna Highway

Four people were transported to the hospital—three with major injuries, and one with life-threatening injuries—following a head-on crash on the Hāna Highway in Spreckelsville, Friday afternoon.
The incident was reported at 3:43 p.m. on May 2, 2025, approximately 52 feet northeast of Nonohe Place.
A preliminary investigation reveals that a black 2007 GMC Sierra truck was traveling eastbound on Hāna Highway in the opposing lane of travel while overtaking other vehicles. At the same time, a black 2023 Nissan Altima sedan was traveling westbound in its proper lane of travel when the truck collided head-on with the sedan, according to police.
Three people were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with major injuries: the operator of the truck, a 52-year-old Pā’ia man; the operator the sedan, a 68-year-old Idaho man; and the front-passenger of the Nissan, a 73-year-old Idaho man.
The rear-passenger of the Nissan, a 63-year-old Idaho woman, sustained life-threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital for further care.
Police say the truck’s airbags did not deploy, while the sedan’s front and side curtain airbags did. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed is believed to be a factor, according to department reports. The involvement of drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is pending.
