Maui police: Speed and alcohol suspected as factors in fatal head-on crash in Kīhei

Maui police say speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in a fatal head-on crash on North Kīhei Road, Tuesday night.
The incident was reported at 7:33 p.m. on May 20, 2025, approximately a half mile northwest of South Kīhei Road.
A preliminary police investigation reveals that a silver 1998 Honda Civic sedan was traveling westbound on North Kīhei Road when it crossed the double solid yellow lines and struck the left rear quarter panel of an eastbound gray 2019 Nissan Frontier pickup truck. The Honda continued traveling in the eastbound lane, subsequently colliding head-on with a silver 2012 Toyota Camry sedan, which was traveling behind the Nissan.
As a result of the collision, the operator of the Honda, a 58-year-old Wailuku man, sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The victim’s identity is currently being withheld pending next of kin notification.
The operator of the Nissan, a 54-year-old Kīhei man, and the operator of the Toyota, a 53-year-old Kīhei man, were both transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition for further treatment for injuries sustained as a result of the collision.
Police say the operator of the Honda was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The operators of the Nissan and Toyota were wearing seat belts, according to police.
The airbags in the Nissan and Toyota did deploy; while the airbag in the Honda did not.
The involvement of drugs is pending as the investigation is ongoing.
