The Lānaʻi Culture & Heritage Center is leading a Memorial Day effort to honor the more than 1,000 people buried on the island.

Their endeavor began on Friday, as Lānaʻi residents gathered to make more than 1,000 handmade bouquets in preparation for a graveside tribute on Monday, May 26.

The nonprofit is calling on all Lānaʻi residents to participate in a cemetery clean-up and floral tribute on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. The goal: to place a bouquet on every marked grave across the island.

Just over 3,000 people live on Lānaʻi. The island is home to a veterans cemetery, and the main cemetery is the final resting place of many immigrants from around the world who came during the pineapple plantation era in search of better lives.
