Brush fire along ‘Pali’ section of Honoapiʻilani burns small area; cause undetermined

A fire along the makai side of the Honoapiʻilani Highway burned an estimated area of 300 by 200 feet before being brought under control on Saturday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 2:21 p.m. on June 14, near Mile 10 of the highway, east of the “Pali” tunnel.
Firefighters arrived to find a brush fire burning on the steep ocean side of the highway. Crews deployed hose lines to contain and extinguish the fire in the difficult and dangerous terrain, with strong swirling winds and hot conditions impacting firefighting efforts.
One lane of the roadway was closed for a portion of time to allow firefighters to work safely.
The fire was brought under control at 3:30 p.m. and extinguished at 4:29 p.m.
Responding units included: Engine 3, Tanker 3, Engine 6 and a battalion chief.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. No injuries or damages were reported.

Fire extinguished at 5:19 p.m. per Command. Roadways are open to regular traffic.
The Maui Fire Department, the Maui Police Department, and the Maui Emergency Management Agency, thanked the public for their cooperation and understanding which allowed emergency crews to work to protect the community.

There is an active brush fire in the area of Mile 10 east of the “Pali” tunnel on Maui. First responders are on scene. Motorists are asked to avoid the area to allow first responders to work. MPD is providing contra-flow for traffic. No action is needed at this time. The Maui Emergency Management Agency continues to monitor the situation and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
