The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (Maui MPO) invites the Hāna community and the public to attend the final in-person community meeting for the Hāna Community Pathway Study on Monday, June 23, 6:30 p.m. at Helene Hall located at Kapueokahi Bay in Hāna.

This event is an opportunity for residents to meet the project team, review the final plan and provide comments..

The Hāna Community Pathway Study aims to create a safe, community-supported pedestrian and bicycle route that reflects local priorities. Over the course of four community meetings and extensive outreach, residents have helped shape the vision, design, and proposed phasing of the project.

Some highlights from previous meetings include:

  • Segments connecting school and town are top priority and were most supported by the community due to their role in safely connecting keiki to Hāna High and Elementary School and linking residents to town.
  • Some segments were removed or downgraded after feedback. Based on strong community concern, especially regarding cultural sensitivity and visitor impact, certain segments like Haneoʻo Road were removed, while others were deprioritized.
  • No use of eminent domain. The draft plan commits to working within existing rights-of-way and emphasizes voluntary agreements with landowners—ensuring no forced property takeovers.
  • Next steps toward implementation were laid out. The project team outlined a “roadmap” for permitting, design, and construction, including potential funding sources such as the Transportation Alternatives Program and Safe Routes to School.
  • Focus on local needs over tourism. The project emphasizes a locally vetted design prioritizing safe routes for Hāna residents, especially keiki and kūpuna.

“This final meeting is a chance to make sure the plan continues to reflect Hāna’s vision,” said Maui MPO Executive Director Kauanoe Batangan. “The feedback we’ve received so far has made a real impact, and we want to ensure your voice continues to guide the next steps.”

The Hāna Community Pathway DRAFT PLAN is available for public review and comment. Find the document on mauimpo.org, and a link to the project website where you can submit comments.
