Zolten Poulsen paced Maui Prep to their third straight boy’s win, while Maui Christian won the girl’s title behind Lila Sloan at the third Maui Interscholastic League surf contest, Saturday at Kokī Beach in Hāna.

Poulsen won his third straight shortboard Boys No. 1 title and repeated in the longboard No. 1. Other finalists for Nā Pueo included Seth Jucker (third in longboard No. 2 and fifth in shortboard No. 2), Bode Wheeler (third in bodyboard), and Tristan Richard (fourth in shortboard No. 3).

Zolten Poulsen, of Maui Prep, leans into his backside bottom turn, and claimed his second straight title longboard no. 1 title. Poulsen also won the shortboard No. 1 to lead Maui Prep to the men’s title. PC: Matt Cibulka

The Lahaina senior was able to handle the shifty, rainy, onshore conditions better than most. “Maybe I got the upper hand, because I’ve been doing it longer, and I’ve been to Hāna a lot more times than everybody else,” Poulsen said. “The waves were super all over the place, but definitely some diamonds in the rough. It was super rainy and stormy but yeah definitely some good ones out there. Super grateful to walk away with a win.”

Maui Prep can clinch the boy’s MIL title with a top five showing at the final contest at Lahaina Harbor. “We have a pretty solid team this year, everybody is fired up”, Poulsen said. “Hopefully we can get it done this year.”

Sloan, a Maui Christian senior, competed in all three events. She won longboard No. 1 and bodyboard and placed second in shortboard No. 1 in leading the Eagles to their first win of the season. Her teammate, Thayane Colpas, was second in shortboard No. 2 and longboard No. 2 while her twin sister, Talia, was fifth in shortboard No. 3.

Sloan was exhausted after winning the last heat of the day, the bodyboard final, but she put a positive spin on it. Sloan said, “I’m tired, it was nice because I got to go in the water a lot. It was kind of all over the place, it was hard to tell where I was in the line-up. For Kokī, the waves were great.”

The win put Maui Christian in contention for the women’s overall title along with Lahainaluna and King Kekaulike, who won the first two contests, respectively, and Maui Prep which has been in the top three in all three events.

Besides Poulsen and Sloane, the other double winner was Keano Jardine, of Maui Christian, who won the shortboard No. 2 and longboard No. 2. Ocean Lipstein, of Lahainaluna, won her third straight shortboard No. 1 title while Mikaia Barnes, of King Kekaulike, claimed her third straight win at shortboard No. 2. Kaja Przeciechowski, of King Kekaulike, won her second title at shortboard No. 3 while her brother, Miki, of Kīhei Charter, won his first bodyboard title. Noah Haas, of Kīhei Charter, won his second title at shortboard No. 3. The other winner was Zoey Offerfeld at girls longboard No. 2.

The battle for the team MIL crowns and team state berth will come down to the final team event at Lahaina Harbor on April 25. The next meet at Hoʻokipa on April 11 will determine the individual MIL qualifiers for the first Hawaiʻi High School Activities Association state surf contest. The HHSAA contest will be May 1, 2 at Hoʻokipa Beach Park.
