Maui police launch ‘Put the Phone Away or Pay’ campaign against distracted driving

As part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Division will enforce a zero-tolerance response to distracted driving, specifically cell phone use while driving.
Beginning Monday, April 6, and continuing through April 13, 2026, motorists will see heightened traffic enforcement as part of the departmentʻs participation in the national “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign for distracted driving awareness enforcement.
Motorists can also expect saturation patrols, including unmarked patrol vehicles, which will result in a visible increase in traffic enforcement focused on distracted driving, particularly cell phone use.
“We ask our community to recognize that the choice to put the phone down and buckle up starts with each driver. Help us prevent senseless and avoidable crashes on our roadways by staying focused and driving responsibly,” police said in a news release.
