Applications open to high school students on Maui for free Fall Film Lab in Lahaina

Hisako Film Lab and Fuzz Box Productions are inviting high school students in grades 9–12 to apply for the Fall Film Lab, a free afterschool filmmaking program running Oct. 6 to Dec. 12, 2026 meeting at Fuzz Box headquarters in Lahaina.

Students will work in small teams to write, produce, and complete an original short film, gaining hands-on experience in filmmaking and collaboration. The program will culminate in a special public red-carpet premiere in December.

The program begins with extended sessions Oct. 6–8 during fall break, followed by regular meetings Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:15–5:30 p.m. Additional filming days will be scheduled by student teams.

The program is completely free and open to Maui residents in grades 9–12. Some camera or editing experience is preferred, but students with limited filmmaking experience are also encouraged to apply.

First round applications are due Sept. 25, 2026 and space is limited.

Hisako Film Lab is a nonprofit founded to educate the next generation of Hawai‘i’s storytellers and filmmakers. It was founded in 2023 by Destin Daniel Cretton, a Maui-raised filmmaker known for directing Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Our programs provide hands-on instruction and resources to Maui’s youth, building foundational skills in film production and focusing on storytelling as a way to celebrate what makes each of us unique. Our goal is to provide an accepting, fun space where young people can discover and amplify their creative voices through the powerful tools of filmmaking.

Fuzz Box is a Lahaina-based multimedia creative collective and studio space designed to inspire and empower Maui’s creative community. Founded by Trevor Arnholt, the 4,000-square-foot facility offers professional workstations for film, video, photography, and music production. Beyond its studio walls, Fuzz Box actively bridges local talent and community through youth media camps, independent film challenges, and public island-wide events.
