AAA Hawaiʻi: Gas prices tick higher, remain among nation’s highest

Hawaiʻi gas prices remain elevated, with drivers paying some of the highest gas prices in the nation, according to the AAA Hawaiʻi Weekend Gas Watch. Gas prices typically decline this time of year, but higher crude oil prices and uncertainty in the global oil market continue to put upward pressure on gas prices at the pump.
The statewide average price for regular unleaded is $5.62 per gallon, 5 cents higher than last week and $1.14 higher than the same time last year. The national average is $4.41 per gallon, 7 cents lower than last week and $1.25 higher than a year ago.
At $5.62 per gallon, Hawaiʻi has the second-highest average gas price in the nation, behind California at $6.40. Washington ranks third at $5.49.
In Kahului, the average price is $5.71 per gallon, 7 cents higher than last week and $1.23 higher than a year ago. In Līhuʻe, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.87 per gallon, 7 cents higher than last week and 91 cents higher than a year ago.
In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.54 per gallon, 4 cents higher than last week and $1.14 higher than a year ago. In Hilo, the average is $5.69 per gallon, 2 cents lower than last week and $1.03 higher than a year ago.
“Hawaiʻi drivers continue to feel the pain at the pump,” said AAA Hawaiʻi spokesperson Kandace Redd. “Gas prices remain higher than they were this time last year. Drivers can be strategic about where they fill up to save on fuel. Gas tends to be more expensive at stations near highways, in downtown areas, and in high-traffic locations. Drivers are encouraged to shop around, look for discounts, and compare prices. Tools like the free AAA Mobile app can help drivers find lower-priced gas nearby.”
