Maui and Molokaʻi humane societies partner to care for 195 animals, transport six stray dogs for adoption

The Maui Humane Society recently partnered with Molokaʻi Humane Society to provide essential preventative health services for animals on Molokaʻi. During a joint community clinic on Friday, Oct. 2, the combined teams successfully microchipped and vaccinated 195 animals, helping strengthen pet health and reunification efforts on the island.
Building on this collaborative effort, MHS is coordinating the transfer and transport of six stray dogs from Molokaʻi to Maui to provide critical veterinary care, rehabilitation, and placement into loving adoptive homes.
The six dogs are scheduled to arrive via boat at Māla Harbor in Lahaina at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. Upon arrival, MHS staff and animal transport personnel will transfer the dogs to the Puʻunēnē shelter, where each animal will undergo comprehensive health assessments, necessary medical treatments, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and behavioral evaluations prior to being made available for foster care or adoption.
“Inter-island partnerships and animal transports are vital to ensuring that pets across all of Maui Nui receive the care and second chances they deserve,” said Nikki Russell, Chief of Operations at Maui Humane Society. “From our joint vaccine clinic on Molokai to welcoming these six dogs to Maui, we are deeply grateful to Molokai Humane Society, our transport teams, and community supporters who make these lifesaving efforts possible.”
To help clear shelter space for incoming animals, MHS is hosting a “Big Dogs Big Sale” this Thursday, October 8th through Saturday, October 10th, offering 50% off adoption fees for adult dogs 45 pounds and up.
How the Community Can Help
- Adopt or Foster: Once cleared by the medical team, the incoming dogs will be placed for adoption. Community members can also take advantage of the “Big Dogs Big Sale” promotion this week by visiting the shelter or browsing available pets online.
- Donate: Lifesaving inter-island clinics, transports, and medical treatments rely heavily on donor support. Tax-deductible donations can be made directly on the Maui Humane Society website.
