A 33-year-old male visitor sustained head injuries and was reportedly drifting in and out of consciousness after falling while hiking Friday afternoon on the Pipiwai Trail in East Maui, the Maui Fire Department reported.

Engine 7 firefighters, an emergency medical crew, National Park Service personnel and the Reach Air Ambulance responded to the mountain rescue incident reported at 2:33 p.m. Friday. Firefighters and medics hiked up the trail to treat the man who was found off of the trail in heavy tree cover.

First responders stabilized the man and carried him down the trail. They transferred him to an air ambulance crew that flew him to Maui Memorial Medical Center around 4:22 p.m.

No information was available on his condition at the hospital.
