Prince Kuhio Day, March 26, 2010
Today is Prince Kuhio Day in Hawaii. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole served as a territorial delegate in the U.S. Congress is credited with his efforts in helping to establish the 1921 federal Hawaiian Homes Commission Act that provides homestead lands for Native Hawaiians.
County observance:
In observance of Prince Kuhio Day, county offices are closed. The Lanai landfill is closed, with other facilities operating on reduced hours. The Waiehu Golf Course and County pools remain open for normal hours of operation.
County of Maui offices will close Friday, March 26, 2010 in observance of Prince Kuhio Day. The Lanai landfill will be closed; Central Maui Landfill will be open from 7 a.m. to noon, the Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, the Hana landfills will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Molokai landfill will be open from 8 a.m. until noon. The Waiehu Golf Course and all County pools will be open for normal hours of operation. Hawaiian Societies Honor Prince Kuhio:
Although Prince Kuhio’s birthday is officially celebrated on March 26th, an Ali‘i Sunday service in his honor was held on March 21st at the Pa‘ia Hawaiian Protestant Church. The service was attended by the Royal Order of Kamehameha, the ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu, Hale O Na Ali‘i, and other Hawaiian societies.
