Crews Douse Small Fire in Kahekili Mac Nut Field

Firefighters in Central Maui responded to a small brush fire reported on Monday morning in the macadamia nut fields mauka of the Kahekili Highway.

The incident was reported at 9:10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, near the Makaʻala Drive recycling center.

Fire crews from Wailuku and Kahului responding to the scene, found a strip of cane grass burning approximately a half-mile mauka of the highway, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

According to Mainaga, crews made access through an old cane road, bringing the the fire under control by 9:19 a.m., and extinguishing the fire by 9:49 a.m.

No damages or injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was undetermined, fire officials said.

According to fire officials, the total area burned was 20-feet by 500-feet.
