21,875 Gallons of Wastewater Overflows in Kīhei

An estimated 21,875 gallons of waste water overflowed into the storm drain system in Kīhei, county officials confirmed.

The incident was reported at 10:57 a.m., and was stopped by 11:11 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 25, according to information released by the Department of Environmental Management.

County officials attribute the overflow to a mechanical failure at the Kīhei #6 Pump Station near Kalama Park in South Maui.

According to County officials, the overflow occurred at three locations including: the corner of South Kīhei Road at Welakahao; the corner of South Kīhei Road at Keala Place; and the south end of Halama Street.

The overflow reportedly entered the storm drain system at Welakahao Road and Keala Place, and the drainage ditch in Kalama Park by the Whale Statue, where signs were posted, county officials said in a press release.

“Bacteriological analyses are being conducted, however, the department is confident the overflow did not reach the ocean, and there are no beach closures,” the announcement said.

County officials say the repairs were corrected and the spill sites were cleaned and disinfected. The State Department of Health was also notified.
