UPDATE: Maui County Flood Watch Cancelled

The National Weather Service cancelled a flood watch for Maui County prior to its scheduled expiration at noon today.

NWS forecasters say, “The threat of widespread flooding rain has diminished.”

“Although a few heavy showers are still possible over Maui County today, they are not expected to be sufficiently widespread to result in flash flooding,” forecasters said.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island until noon on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

Forecasters with the NWS say “persistent deep moisture and an upper level low over the southeast portion of the state will continue to bring the threat of flooding rains.”

The forecast calls for the greatest threat of flash flooding in windward areas of each island.

The National Weather Service re-issued a flood advisory for the Island of Maui until 5 p.m.

At 1:40 p.m., NWS forecasters say radar showed an area of heavy rain that was nearly stationary in the East Maui area of Nāhiku, about 25 miles east of Kahului.

Other locations in the advisory include: Kanahā Beach Park, Wailuku, Waikapū, Waiheʻe, Waiehu, ʻUkumehame, Spreckelsville, Puʻunēnē, Pukalani, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Olowalu, Nāpili, Makawao, Māʻalaea, Launiupoko, Lahaina, Keʻanae, Kapalua, Kahakuloa, Kāʻanapali, Huelo, Hoʻokipa Beach Park, Honolua, Honokōwai, Honokōhau, Hāliʻimaile, and Haʻikū.

There is also a flood watch in effect until  noon on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, for Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island.

The National Weather Service has extended the flood advisory for the Island of Maui, and issued a flood advisory for Molokaʻi until 11 a.m.

At 7:45 a.m., forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar showed heavy rain near Waiheʻe, or about six miles northwest of Kahului.

Other locations in the advisory include: Haʻikū, Waiehu, Paʻuwela, Nāpili, Kapalua, Kahakuloa, Kāʻanapali, Hoʻokipa, Honolua, Honokōwai, and Honokōhau.

The Maui advisory may need to be extended beyond 11 a.m if heavy rain persists.

On Molokaʻi, forecasters say radar showed heavy rain across central and eastern parts of the island at around 7:54 a.m.

According to the NWS, the area of rain was nearly stationary, but may spread west across the entire island.

Other locations in the advisory include: Molokaʻi Airport, Maunaloa, Kualapuʻu, Kepuhi, Kalaupapa, Hoʻolehua, and Hālawa Valley.

A flood advisory in effect for the Island of Maui until 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014.

At around 5 a.m., forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar showed an area of nearly stationary, heavy rain near Ke’anae, or about 21 miles east of Kahului.

Forecasters say other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to: Waieheʻe, Paʻuwela, Huelo, Hoʻokipa Beach Park, and Hāna.

As a precaution, motorists and pedestrians are advised not to cross fast-flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.  The public is also advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
