Recycling Event Seeks to Relieve Pressure on Landfill

Mālama Maui Nui (aka Community Work Day) will hold their monthly Mālama ‘Āina Recycling Event at King Kekaulike High School on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The nonprofit says Upcountry residents will have a convenient location to recycle household items that some may consider rubbish, but that can actually be reused, recycled, or properly disposed of by partner organizations.

Malama Maui Nui organizes Mālama ‘Āina Recycling events at different locations in Maui County every month to alleviate the pressure on county landfills. All Maui residents are welcome to participate.

The nonprofit’s road crew and volunteers will accept scrap metal, bicycles, appliances, lawn mowers, cooking oil, cellular phones, household batteries, vehicle batteries, printer cartridges, computers, electronics, HI-5 recyclables, telephone books, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, used eye glasses, hearing aids, books, DVDs, clothing, non HI-5 glass, plastic, aluminum recyclables, and other household items. Motor oil, hazardous fluids, green waste, and vehicles will NOT be accepted; paper shredding will also not be available. There is a suggested $5 fee to drop off regular-sized (or smaller) vehicle tires.

Residents are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for Feed My Sheep, a unique mobile food distribution program for Maui families and individuals in need.

Mālama ‘Āina partners working with Malama include Hammerhead Metals, Maui Friends of the Library, The Lions Club, Intrade Corporation, ARC of Maui, Savers, Habitat for Humanity Maui Ecycling, Pacific Biodiesel, Maui Disposal, and the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management.
