UPDATE: Deadly Motorcycle Accident Overnight on Piʻilani Hwy

***Update: Clifford Spencer, 63, of Kahului succumbed to the injuries he sustained related to this crash and died while at Maui Memorial Medical Center. This is Maui County’s fourth fatality this year, as compared to four at the same time last year.
A motorcyclist was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after crashing into a guardrail on the Piʻilani Highway overnight.
The incident was reported at 1:56 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014, on the Piʻilani Highway, just north of the Kaiwahine Street intersection in Kīhei.
According to police reports, a 63-year-old man operating a black 1997 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling north on the Piʻilani Highway when he lost control of the motorcycle, and collided into a guardrail on the western shoulder of the highway.
As a result of the collision, police say the motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
Police say the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending, according to a police report filed by Sergeant William Hankins with the Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Section.
