Cinco de Mayo Celebration Offers Cheap Drinks, Food

Remember when May provided only one opportunity to celebrate some event you maybe weren’t entirely clear on?

Memorial Day is lonely no more, as recent years have found Americans inexplicably embracing Cinco de Mayo.

Named for El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla) of 1862, when outnumbered Mexican troops defeated the French in an unlikely victory, it’s given US grocery stores a whole new reason to promote Dos Equis and Tostitos.

It’s not really a “thing” in Mexico, but if it’s your thing – or just an excuse to drink tequila – then you might be excited to learn that the 5th happens to be on Monday.

Moreover, the new Sangrita Grill and Cantina in Ka’anapali is holding a Cinco de Mayo celebration, which doubles as their second annual benefit event for the Lahainaluna High School Agricultural Program.

Held from 3 to 10 p.m., attendees can anticipate live flamenco music from Indio and Avi from 6 to 9 p.m. and extended happy hour cantina prices – $2 off cocktails, margaritas, beer and select wine – which usually end at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the happy hour menu offers such items as Pomegranate Guacamole ($6), House salsa ($3), Nachos with cheese and black beans ($6) or topped with your choice of pork, chicken or short ribs ($10).

There are also a variety of tacos such as flank steak, house-made chorizo or grilled ono tacos available for $7-$8 for two.

In addition to the regular menu, celebrants can expect a steak tenderloin tenderloin special served with caramelized onions, yellow chilis, guacamole, pico de gallo, jicama slaw, and crema along with tortillas, rice and black beans for $23.
