US Senator Brian Schatz of Hawai‘i recognized three Maui students who he appointed to this year’s US Service Academies during a reception held in his Honolulu office last week.
Among the Maui students recognized were Iain Armitage and Erin Lindsey of Kula who attend the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus, and were appointed to the US Air Force Academy.
Also recognized was Trent Hori of Kahului who attends Maui High School. He was appointed to the US Naval Academy.
“The US Service Academies have educated some of our Nation’s finest leaders, men and women who secure our daily liberties,” said Senator Schatz in a press release announcement. “This year’s appointees represent Hawai‘i’s best and brightest students with the dedication to serve our country as commissioned officers in our military,” he said.
According to Senator Schatz, more than 70 high school students from across the state applied for the congressional nomination, with applicants selected based on academics, test scores, leadership, essays, athletics and extra-curricular activities.
