A free discount card for prescription medication is now available for Maui County residents, according to an announcement today from Council Member Michael Victorino.

The discount program is made possible through a partnership between Maui County and the National Association of Counties.

According to Victorino, the NACo Prescription Discount Card Program has saved residents across the nation more than $500 million on medications, with an average cost savings of 24% off the retail price for prescribed medications.

“This program is not new, but reports indicate only a few claims have been made in Maui County,” said Victorino in a county press release.

“With rising health maintenance costs, this opportunity to save in prescription drugs– including select pet medications – is a way to keep dollars in residents’ pockets,” he said.

According to Victorino, residents can get a discount card at no cost from participating pharmacies including: Longs, Costco, Safeway, Kmart, Walmart, Walgreens and Mina Pharmacy. Residents can also print their own card and check participating pharmacies by visiting the NACo Drug Card website.

The card can be used by residents regardless of age, income or existing health coverage; and there are no membership fees or restrictions on frequency of use.

***Savings may vary by drug and by pharmacy.
