Ask the Mayor: How to Request New Traffic Lights
The mayor answers questions from the public in this series.
By Mayor Alan Arakawa
Q: What program and how long of a traffic study does it take to get a new traffic light installed at a busy intersection? For example, the intersection at Waiʻale Road and Waiʻinu Road needs a traffic light, so I’m wondering how long would that take? Mahalo.
A: The county has completed a traffic study at that location, and the design of the traffic light has been initiated by Maui Lani Partners as required under our traffic master plan agreement. The design is tricky, however, given the geometrics of the intersection and the existing entrances to the commercial building along Waiʻale. Federal funds are available for construction, but not for a few years.
