Accidental Fire Sparks One Acre of Brush on Molokaʻi

A brush fire on residential property near the Hoʻolehua Airport on Molokaʻi burned an estimated one acre before being brought under control on Friday afternoon, June 12, 2015.

Fire officials say the fire was sparked accidentally when remnants from an agricultural fire ignited nearby grass.

The fire was first reported at 12:47 p.m., was contained at 2:04 p.m., and extinguished at 2:55 p.m., according to department reports.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 12:58 p.m. to find a quarter acre of grass and brush burning about a mile east of the airport, on the south side of Mauna Loa Highway in Hoʻolehua.

An engine and water tanker from Kaunakakai arrived minutes later and assisted with bringing the fire under control.
