STATEMENT FROM MAUI WAENA PRINCIPAL JAMIE YAP REGARDING TODAY’S LOCKDOWN

“Maui Waena was directed to go into a lockdown by the Maui Police Department today, starting at 12:15 p.m. and ending at 1 p.m. as a precautionary measure. At no time was Maui Waena under any threat. There was no intruder on campus,” Yap tells Maui Now.

Yap said he spoke with students at around 1:50 p.m. after the lockdown had been lifted to explain to them that there was no intruder and that Maui Waena was never under any threat.

Parents of students at Maui Waena will be receiving a Cine-Voice message at 4:30 p.m. as well as an email to reiterate the message.

“It is our highest priority to keep our students and staff safe at all times,” said Yap.

Maui Now reported earlier that police were in pursuit of a person(s) outside of the campus. As a precautionary measure, they wanted to make sure that the person they were pursuing did not come onto nearby campuses.

The notification states, “Caution is being advised; if at all possible, please have your child picked up after school rather than allowing him or her to walk home.

“An announcement to students will be made before school is out/as we are updated.

“Please do not call the school (at this time) in an effort to keep the school’s phone lines open.”

We also received word of Lihikai being on lockdown from around noon.  Maui Now has learned that the lockdown has since been lifted for that campus.
