UPDATE: 6:06 p.m. 1/25/16
A Wailuku man suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle accident reported shortly before noon on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 in Kahului. The incident was reported at approximately 11:53 a.m. on Kea Street, at the intersection of Kaiemi Street. Maui police say the crash occurred as a blue 2013 Suzuki GSXR 1000 motorcycle traveling west on Kea Street, failed to negotiate a left bend in the roadway.
Maui police say the operator laid the motorcycle down and collided into a rock wall on the north side of the roadway. According to police reports, the operator subsequently sustained critical life threatening injuries resulting from the crash. The victim was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The operator of the motorcycle has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin as Martin Mortensen, 40, of Wailuku.
A preliminary police investigation revealed the operator was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash. The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This was Maui County’s third traffic fatality for 2016, compared to no fatalities at the same time last year.
