Suspect in Car Theft, Police Chase Arrested for Robbery

Maui police arrested a man for vehicle theft, robbery and other related charges following a vehicle chase through Central Maui on Sunday.

Police say the incident began at around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at the Days Inn in Kīhei, when the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Andrew Flood, opened the driver side door of a parked rental vehicle, and demanded the victim exit the vehicle.

The victim, described as an adult female, was seated within the front passenger seat of the vehicle Police say she complied as Flood drove away with the vehicle.

According to police reports, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the stolen vehicle on Mokulele Highway, but police say Flood refused to pull over.  Police say Flood eventually lost control of the vehicle on Hansen Road and ended up in the brush on the Kahului side of the roadway. Police say Flood then exited the vehicle and fled into the bushes towards Dairy Road where the officer lost sight of him.

According to police reports, Flood attempted to steal another vehicle at Aloha Island Mart where another adult female victim was fixing her vehicle. Police say Flood entered through the driver’s side door and attempted to start the vehicle, but it wouldn’t start. Police say Flood stole a pack of cigarettes from inside of the vehicle and walked away.

Police say Flood then approached an adult male victim sitting within his vehicle at the same location (Aloha Island Mart) and yelled at the male victim to get out of the vehicle.  Police say he then punched the victim in the face several times and fled on foot when the victim exited the vehicle and told the suspect he was going to call police.

Flood was eventually located by Wailuku patrol officers and placed under arrest. He was positively identified by the victims.

He has since been charged with the following offenses:

• 2 counts of second degree robbery;
• 3 counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle;
• reckless driving;
• 2 counts of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle; and
• third degree assault.

Flood remained in custody at last report in lieu of $155,000 bail.
