Ask the Mayor: Can the County Post More No-Smoking Signs?

Aloha Mayor Arakawa,

Q: I often swim at the Kīhei Aquatic Center and notice people sitting outside the complex and smoking. I don’t have a problem if the people want to smoke in their cars, but I hate to walk through cigarette smoke.

According to the Maui County website, it is illegal to smoke in the parking lot of any of the county pools. It also states on the website that this information will be posted on signs. If so, where are the signs?

A: When the no-smoking law was first approved in 2014, signs were purchased and about 50 signs distributed to each park district. Staff were instructed to place these signs in our heavily used parks and facilities.

A sign is posted at the entrance to the pool in front the parking lot, and parks staff have been given a few more signs to put up at the pool. Park rangers will also be monitoring for violations.
