Kaiser on Maui Volunteers for Annual Day of Service

UPDATE: More than 150 volunteer physicians, staff, and family members continued a 12-year tradition of giving back on Martin Luther King Jr. Day by participating in the Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi Annual Day of Service on Maui. The volunteers worked with Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, a nonprofit organization in Kahului dedicated to protecting Maui’s rich native plant heritage, for the second year.
“We’re excited to be back at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, working as one team to give back to the Maui community through environmental stewardship and cultural health,” said David Ulin, MD, Kaiser Permanente, Physician in Charge, Maui.
“Our annual day of service is an important tradition that allows us to give back to our communities, especially on the neighbor islands,” said Ray Hahn, senior vice president, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plan Hawaiʻi Region.
“Working with Maui Nui Botanical Gardens to preserve native plants gives our children, community members and visitors a chance to learn more about their rich cultural and environmental importance.”
Volunteers assisted with several projects at the gardens, including planting and caring for a medicinal garden, painting around the facilities, creating new cinder and gravel paths, cleaning and juicing sugarcane, and preparing plant materials to be used by visiting school groups.
Today’s volunteer project was part of a larger community service effort by more than 1,000 Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi physicians, staff, families and community organizations statewide, with additional service projects taking place simultaneously on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, and Kauaʻi. They joined thousands of Kaiser Permanente employees nationally, who participated in a “day on, not a day off” on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, volunteering their time to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service.

The 12th annual Day of Service includes similar events on Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

Among those participating in today’s service project are: Dave Ulin, MD, Kaiser Permanente Physician in Charge, Maui; Ray Hahn, Senior Vice President, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plan Hawaiʻi Region; and Barry Shitamoto, MD, Interim CEO, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Maui Region.
Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi has provided total health to the people of Hawaiʻi for more than 50 years, with physicians who are members of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group.
