Maui Police Seek Accreditation Renewal

Starting March 27, 2017 to March 30, 2017, a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will examine all aspects of the Maui Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

Verification by the assessment team that the Maui Police Department meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to maintain accredited status and continue the department’s national recognition of law enforcement professional standards.

Accreditation provides recognition that the department’s managerial and operational policies and procedures are in accord with a set of professional standards and that the department has made a concerted effort to attain professional status. It assures that department policies and procedures are in written form and available to all personnel. Accreditation also assures personnel that every aspect of the department’s personnel system is in accord with professional standards which are both fair and equitable.

The accreditation program manager for the Maui Police Department is Captain Everett K. Ferreira. The assessment team is comprised of two CALEA assessors that come from diverse backgrounds.

The assessors will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the department’s written documents, interview individuals and visit offices and other areas where compliance of the standards can be observed. Inspections of all six police districts will be conducted.

The process of re-accreditation is held every three years following initial accreditation. This will be the department’s seventh re-accreditation assessment. This process is to ensure that the department has continued compliance with all applicable standards. Initial accreditation status was achieved on August 3, 1996.

As part of the on-site assessment, the public and department employees are invited to offer comments on the department’s services and performance to the assessors over the telephone on Tuesday, March 28th from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The telephone number to call is (808)244-6444 for Maui residents.
