UPDATE: Crews Douse 3 Grass Fires Along Honoapi‘ilani

UPDATE: Oct. 4, 2017, 8:03 p.m.

Maui fire crews extinguished three separate grass fires along the Honoapi‘ilani Highway around midday Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017.

Firefighters received the call at 11:53 a.m. from motorists traveling the highway that there were at least two separate fires on the makai side the road between McGregor Point and the Scenic Lookout.

Kahului fire crews arrived at 12:04 p.m. and found a strip of grass 100 feet long by 10 feet wide burning just west of McGregor Point.

A Wailuku engine company came upon a 20-by-20-foot grass fire a few hundred yards west of the first one.

A third fire was discovered a several hundred yards west of the second fire and was quickly extinguished by another Wailuku crew in a mini-pumper truck. The third grass fire covered a 20-by-20-foot area.

The cause of the three separate fires was undetermined.

It was called extinguished at 12:40 p.m.

Traffic on Honoapi‘ilani Highway continued to flow, but at a slower pace while crews worked on extinguishing the fires.

A Wailuku engine and mini-pumper, along with a Kahului water tanker and engine company responded to the incident.

UPDATE 12:37 p.m.

Maui Police sent out a message stating the roadway will reopen as emergency crews have extinguished the fires and are cleaning up the area.

Honoapi‘ilani Highway is closed to traffic between mile-marker 7 and the scenic lookout due to several brush fires on the makai side of the highway in Mā‘alaea. Emergency crews are on scene. Motorists should expect delays.

The County of Maui has sent out a notification to stay off the Pali. There are reports of multiple brush fires on Honoapiilani Hwy and traffic is at a standstill.

Maui Now received an unofficial report that there were three brush fires in the area before the scenic lookout on Honoapi‘ilani Highway. The report says MPD is closing the road at the 7.5 mile marker. MFD is on scene and Air 1 is on standby.
